A steam train chuffs across a typically British landscape of fields and hedgerows with a grey sky above. In the foreground to the right, the figure of a horse etched into the chalk downland dominates the picture. Ravilious returned to the subject of hill figures repeatedly during his career. They perhaps represented to him the mysterious relationship between ancient man, nature and art.
'Westbury Horse' (1939) by British painter and print-maker Eric Ravilious is a beautiful limited edition giclee on 310gsm thick Hahnemuhle German Etching paper. This is one of a series of chalk figures of the South East of England painted by Ravilious before and during the World War II. This fine art print makes the perfect pair alongside our 'Train Landscape' print, also available from Eric Ravilious Prints. In 'Westbury Horse' you can see the train in the background and in the painting 'Train Landscape' through the window you can see the chalk horse on the hillside. You might also be interested in paintings of other chalk hill figures 'Vale of the White Horse' and 'Wilmington Giant'.
